Academic Program

Spa Christian School provides a thorough education for students in preschool through sixth grade.

Core subjects

  • Core academic subjects taught daily include reading, language, writing, math, science, and social studies. Younger grades include a strong phonics program to offer the keys to breaking the reading code; this along with a strong literature-base provides children opportunity to love reading and learning. Read-alouds are included daily in every grade.

Specials

  • Each week every student enjoys gym, art, music, and Spanish. These are taught by other specialists in their fields.

Technology

  • Our newly-outfitted technology lab allows each student in grades 1-6 to receive weekly instruction from a certified technology teacher.  Projects connect with multiple subject areas across the curriculum.
  • Proper keyboarding technique speeds typing and enhances accuracy.  In addition to computer instruction, older students have frequent hands-on time with keyboarding units.
  • With computers in every classroom, each student has opportunity to enjoy many learning games and programs.

Accelerated Reader

  • AR is a supplemental program which guides students toward the appropriate reading level for their independent reading. After books are enjoyed, a brief computer-generated test shows the teacher their comprehension level.

Textbooks

  • The heart of a Christian education is the teacher whose worldview is founded upon God’s word. Teachers use a wide variety of textbooks, some of which are published by Christians, others by major publishers. Every subject area is studied from the perspective of God’s truth, fully acknowledging His active participation in creation and history.

Testing

  • Stanford Achievement Tests are administered in grades 2, 3, 5, and 6. Our students typically perform at least two grade levels above students in the public sector.
  • New York State ELA, Math, and science tests are administered to students in fourth grade. This ensures that we keep on par academically with other New York State schools and keeps us aware of current trends in terminology and testing procedures. The fifth grade Social Studies test trains students in DBQs (Document Based Questions) and helps prepare them for the secondary educational experience.

Small class size

  • With a limit of 18 students in older grades and 15 in younger, each student is well-known by the teacher. Appropriate expectations are set for each child, and accommodation is made for various learning styles.
  • Children learn well in a small-group setting; opportunity for discussion greatly enhances the process of education. Books and paper are merely tools a teacher uses; students at Spa Christian are actively engaged in learning through peer interaction, group projects, and hands-on activities all presented by well-qualified and experienced teachers.
